The Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023: Cordless tools on the march
More and more amateur gardeners and DIYers are recognizing the benefits of battery-powered equipment. That is one of the central findings of the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023. Einhell Germany AG, the leading supplier of garden and DIY tools, joined forces with the SINUS Institute to conduct a representative survey of more than 2,000 partici-pants exploring what the German population think about doing things themselves in the house and garden, and what resources they use.
No getting past the cordless (drill) driver
It is undoubtedly the most popular tool: At over 90 percent, the cordless (drill) driver is by far the most frequently used tool in Germany. This and other findings come from the recently published “Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023” conducted by the SINUS Institute on behalf of Einhell Germany AG.
“In the Delphi study entitled “The 2030 Home” that we conducted in 2021, we discovered that the value people attach to their own home is rising sharply and that people are increasingly finding enjoyment in doing little jobs themselves. With the 2023 DIY study, we as the leading supplier of garden and DIY tools want to drill down this attitude and analyze it in more detail,” says Andreas Kroiss, CEO of Einhell Germany AG, on the background to the representative survey.
Many benefits from a switch to batteries
More than 70 percent of Germans would like to use multiple devices with a battery. Unlimited freedom of movement, the lack of reliance on a power source and elimination of the risk of stumbling over cables are the three most important reasons cited.
“When it comes to buying new tools, users attach importance to long product life, user friendliness and the life of cordless tools,” says Dr. Marc Calmbach, managing director of the SINUS Institute and project leader of the study. “It goes without saying that price, quality and performance are also critical.”
A good quarter of those surveyed already use home and garden tools that belong to a battery platform. Many households are looking to expand their portfolio of battery-powered devices in the near future. For the garden, hedge trimmers, grass trimmers and lawn mowers are particularly high on the list of intended purchases.
Half the population is in principle willing to shell out more on battery-powered equipment than on corded or petrol-driven alternatives. The main barrier to a switch to batteries is that the current tools still work.
Younger generation makes more use of cordless tools
Older respondents are currently still somewhat cautious about buying cordless tools. The younger generation, on the other hand, is much more open to batteries: They are also more often willing to spend greater amounts on cordless tools and, in contrast to their older counterparts, tend to own more battery-powered than corded or petrol-driven tools.
It is also noticeable that women are consistently more persuaded of the benefits of cordless tools than men. 80 percent of women, for instance, consider them to be environmentally friendly (compared with 67 percent of men) and safer. Once they have decided on a brand, 40 percent also remain loyal to it thereafter.
“Our study demonstrates not only that is DIY held in high regard in the German population, but also that gardening enthusiasts and DIYers increasingly know and value the benefits offered by cordless tools,” Andreas Kroiss adds.
