Germans’ interest in DIY and gardening: Einhell calculates first DIY index

DIY and gardening are among the favorite leisure activities of Germans, but just how great is their interest in DIY activities really? How often do they reach for the cordless screwdriver or lawn mower? How do they rate their skills? For the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023, Einhell Germany AG, the leading supplier of garden and DIY tools, joined forces with the SINUS Institute to examine how the German population feels about doing things for themselves in the house and garden. The results of the representative survey of more than 2,000 respondents are summed up in the Einhell DIY Index.

The present degree of DIY affinity of German consumers has now, for the first time, been summed up in a single figure in the Einhell DIY Index, part of the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023. It currently stands at 62 points.

Key ratio for the DIY sector

Regardless of demographic features, more than half of Germans are interested in DIY and gardening. The primary motivating factors are independence, relaxation, self-fulfillment and self-affirmation. Other than lack of time, there are very few serious impediments to tackling small jobs in the house and garden. The present degree of DIY affinity of German consumers has now, for the first time, been summed up in a single figure in the Einhell DIY Index, part of the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023. It currently stands at 62 points, putting it in the top half of a scale from 0 through 100. The index comprises the dimensions of interest in DIY (54 points), frequency of DIY activity (60 points), and subjective assessment of DIY skills (74 points). Demographically, it is the middle age group of 30 to 49-year-olds who have the greatest DIY affinity.

Enjoying doing little jobs for themselves

“In the Delphi study entitled “The 2030 Home” that we conducted in 2021, we discovered that the value people attach to their own home is rising sharply and that people are increasingly finding enjoyment in doing little jobs themselves. With the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023, we as the leading supplier of garden and DIY tools wanted to drill down this attitude and analyze it in more detail,” says Andreas Kroiss, CEO of Einhell Germany AG, on the background to the representative survey. “With this Einhell DIY Index, we have laid a reliable foundation that will enable us to measure how the attitude of German consumers toward work in the home and garden develops over the next few years.”

Cordless tools on the march

The affinity of Germans with the trend toward battery-operated equipment was also surveyed as part of the Einhell Do-It-Yourself Study 2023. Result: More than 70 percent of Germans would like to use multiple devices with a battery. Unlimited freedom of movement, the lack of reliance on a power source and elimination of the risk of stumbling over cables are the three most important reasons cited. “When it comes to buying new tools, users attach importance to long product life, user friendliness and the life of cordless tools,” says Dr. Marc Calmbach. “At the same time, the price, quality and performance are also critical.”
